Job Description:

The Aircraft Communications Engineer support s the Network Operations Control (NOC) by maintaining aircraft data links and communication systems. This role will also develop, trou bleshoot, and implement process improvements to ensure the safe and efficient operation of Southwest aircraft. The Aircraft Communications Engineer has a strategic mindset and strong communications skills which enable them to drive the future of Southwest’s aircraft communication systems.

Knowledge and experience with Avionics, Aviation Communications, ACARS, and Aircraft Condition Monitoring Systems are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities
Maintain responsibility for the management, development, coordination, installation, and maintenance of advanced technologies and systems as required for the safe and efficient operation of Southwest aircraft including ground-based systems for use within the Department as well as aircraft-based systems
Develop and maintain onboard aircraft applications, databases, and message formats necessary to provide Pilot access as well as remote access to aircraft
Provide technical development, and support of aircraft data link systems
Coordinate necessary changes with Flight Operations, Dispatch, OCC, Maintenance, Ground Operations, FAA, avionics manufacturers, service providers, and other departments and outside agencies as required
Participate and represent the Company at industry and technical meetings related to the use of data links for Air Traffic Control and Airline Operational Control services
Conduct research that tests or analyzes the feasibility, design, operation, or performance of equipment, components, or systems
Confer with engineers or other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, or provide technical information/updates
Develop and maintain onboard aircraft applications, databases, and message formats necessary to provide Pilot access as well as remote access to aircraft
Investigate equipment failures or difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and recommend remedial actions
May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services
Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
Skilled in collecting, organizing, visualizing, and assimilating data including turning raw data into meaningful information using data-oriented programming languages and visualization software
Skilled in excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of personnel and disciplines inside and outside the Company
Skilled in writing computer programs for various purposes
Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
Ability to listen, understand, and communicate ideas presented in writing and/or in speaking with others
Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions, including finding a relationship among unrelated events
Education
Required: High School Diploma or GED
Experience
Intermediate level experience, fully functioning broad knowledge in:
Project management
Flight operations and flight dispatch
Aircraft data link communications
Computer programming
Licensing/Certification

Physical Abilities
Ability to perform work duties from [limited space workstation/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
Other Qualifications
Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
Ability to work extended hours based on operational needs
