Job Summary: We are looking for a qualified Materials Science Engineer or Metallurgist with Alloy Development and Physical Metallurgy experience based in our lab in Troy, MI. The successful candidate will oversee alloy/process/product development projects and work as an expert resource to the plants and product development teams in North America. The position requires up to 50% travel both domestic and international. This position reports to the Manager, Upstream R&D, I&T.

Salary Range: $77,000 to $121,000
Required Education/Experience:
- Minimum of a Bachelors’ Degree in Materials Science or Engineering is required; Masters’ or PhD preferred
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in Materials Science/Metallurgical Engineering or other relevant experience in the aluminum industry
- Ability to communicate in English both orally and written formats effectively with management and peers
- Travel up to 50% both international and domestic
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- Expertise in physical metallurgy for development of alloys with specific emphasis on influence of microstructure on mechanical behavior
- Knowledge of precipitation heat treat process is helpful
- Knowledge of the extrusion process and associated process metallurgy preferred
- Demonstrated ability to link process outputs to customer requirements
- Demonstrated ability to work in and through teams at all levels of the workforce
Job Responsibilities:
- Initiate and manage research and development projects focused on the Extrusion North America business areas
- Participate in product development teams as the expert in developing solutions for gaps in metallurgical understanding required for next generation products and processes
- Support the business areas with metallurgical expertise focused on alloy development and analysis
- Collaborate globally with Hydro’s Innovation & Technology Center and the entire Hydro network for project coordination, competence transfer, long-term-projects and maintenance of Academic networks in support of a Customer First, One Company and Entrepreneurial approach
