Job Description
Job Summary:
The primary focus of the Instrumentation Engineer role is to ensure reliable safe, compliant, and economical operations to TPC’s manufacturing and terminal assets. The primary focus of this role is to:
- Apply engineering principles of instrumentation and process measurement to the design, operation, maintenance and continuous improvement of instrumentation, analyzer, and measurement systems in a petrochemical processing plant
- Inspect and audit instrumentation installations to ensure operational needs and conformance with design and engineering standards
- Perform engineering duties such as the design, planning, installation of instrumentation, analyzer, and other measurement systems
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides technical support and expertise in the application and use of instrumentation and electrical devices in a petrochemical manufacturing facility
- Works directly with operations and engineers of other disciplines to continuously improve overall reliability of operating assets
- Develops plans and leads medium- and long-term programs and initiatives to address obsolescence and other strategic operational reliability threats
- Provides technical knowledge and training to lower level professional and technical staff
- Tracks overall reliability of instrumentation, analyzer, and measurement systems and implements improvements as needed to continuously improve performance
- Leads root cause investigation and other failure analyses relating to instrumentation, analyzer, and other measurement systems
- Ownership of the design and implementation of Preventive Maintenance (PM) programs for instrumentation, analyzer, and measurement systems
- Performs technical advisory role on I&E equipment operational, engineering, and repair issues and defines repair work scopes and supervises repairs as needed, ensuring quality check points are established and communicated
- Responsible for equipment specifications and scoping for projects installing instrumentation, analyzer, and measurement system equipment. Maintains and updates plant equipment files and Process Safety Information (PSI) as needed
- Stays abreast and reviews new instrumentation, analyzer, and measurement system equipment technologies and how they may be of benefit and applied, ensuring that implementation is applied uniformly throughout the facility
- Creates equipment standards and drives equipment improvement
- Interfaces with Procurement to identify inventoried parts and source new parts as needed
- Analyzes instrument data
- Other duties as assigned by leadership
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8 (8) years in a refining, petrochemical, and/or chemical plant operation in either a maintenance, reliability and/or design and implementation role
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field and relevant plant experience
- Fundamental understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles as applied to instrumentation, analyzers, and measurement systems in a petrochemical facility
- Able to work safely in the plant environment to troubleshoot the process using PFD's, P&ID's, interlock documentation, loop sheets, vendor books and other documentation
- Ability to work closely with others to leverage needed skills to maintain the plant assets
- Knowledge of field instrumentation and the connectivity and interaction with various control systems
- Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills including the ability to interface with internal customer contacts
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage effectively at all levels of the organization
- Must possess a high level of personal initiative, be capable of independent decision-making and work effectively with minimal supervision
- Able to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and objectives effectively
- Capable of building and leading through teamwork with orientation for driving for results
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365
- Must be eligible to work in the United States for any company in an ongoing capacity without company sponsorship
- Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with refining and/or petrochemical production processes, logistics and activities
- Knowledge of industry engineering and technology standards, principles, and practices
- Working knowledge of Oracle or related ERP software
- Basic working knowledge of MAXIMO or related Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) tools
- Hands-on maintenance and applications experience with control valves and various level control systems (dP, displacer type, etc.) instrumentation
- Working knowledge of control systems (Delta V, Honeywell TDC-3000) and their relationship to instrumentation with regards to basic programming and configuration function
- Gas Chromatograph Analyzer & CEMS Analyzer experience – Siemens Maxum II, Yokogawa GC1000/8000, Mark II analyzers
- Delta V DCS and AMS experience in its application of diagnostic and performance-monitoring tools for instrumentation
- High speed turbine control and data acquisition systems such as Woodward Peak and Protech Governor Control experience
- Condition Monitoring Systems experience (Bentley-Nevada or related)
