Job Description
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Scientific Data Division has an opening for a Scientific Software Engineer (Remote Friendly) to join the team.
The Scientific Data Division fosters breakthrough discoveries through the application and development of novel data science methods, technologies, and infrastructures in partnership with science domain experts. We perform focused research and development in the areas of data driven modeling and analytics, scalable methods, data lifecycle and infrastructure, digital integrity, security, and privacy for scientific computing, and sustainable software engineering with deep science partnerships.
The Usable Data Systems (UDS), Sustainable Software Engineering (SSE), and Integrated Data Systems (IDS) groups in the Scientific Data Division (SciData) have an immediate opening for a Computer Systems Engineer (CSE), who will join a team that is engaged in a wide array of research and development projects. This position will work with researchers and application scientists from the DOE Office of Science community, and faculty and students from universities both nationally and internationally, on a wide array of software development and data science problems serving the broader SciData mission.
What You Will Do as a CSE3:
- Design and develop software solutions to enable scientific research, as part of diverse teams including domain scientists.
- Deploy, install, configure, integrate, and test software solutions.
- Collect, manipulate, process, and analyze data related to scientific computing systems.
- Provide input to domain science and/or computer science research papers suitable for submission to peer-reviewed venues.
- Coordinate and/or lead the development and science teams on requirements and features.
- Coordinate and/or lead the software development process for the team.
- Present to audiences within and outside the lab.
In addition to the above, the CSE4 also will:
- Lead the scoping and planning of staffing for current and projected project requirements
- Lead the planning and architecture of advanced data and computational infrastructure
- Help develop strategic partnerships both inside and outside the lab to bring in new capabilities and interface to domain science partners
What is Required as a CSE3:
- Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Proficiency programming in Python and experience with other procedural or functional programming language(s).
- Demonstrated experience with the entire software development process, from requirements through design to implementation and deployment.
- Ability to conduct analysis and work independently.
- Excellent English written and oral communication.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.
Additional Required Qualifications, CSE4:
- Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of related experience; or eight years and a Master’s degree; an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Demonstrated experience with scoping and planning of efforts.
- Demonstrated experience with strategic coordination across multiple projects, groups, and/or stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages like C/C++, Java, or JavaScript (and related technologies).
- Familiarity with UNIX systems and tools.
- Experience with parallel programming.
- Experience with HPC and cloud computing.
- Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) approaches to data analysis.
- Experience using and/or deploying database systems.
- Experience with parallel and/or distributed computational workflows or data processing pipelines.
- Experience working in cross-functional teams.
- Experience with software project management.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- If hired at a level 3 -The full salary range of this position is between $10,307 to $17,393 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $11,595 to $14,172 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
- If hired at a level 4 - The full salary range of this position is between $11,738 to $19,808 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $13,205 to $16,140 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

- Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework and remote. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
