What You Will Do

The Materials Science in Radiation and Dynamic Extremes Group (MST-8) is seeking an R&D Engineer 4 to serve as programmatic lead for the development of the Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility (LEFFF) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The successful candidate will join the MST-8 group and serve as Team Leader for the LEFFF project team in MST-8. The selected candidate will support the integration of internal and external customers to align with LANL's energy security mission. Additionally, the selected candidate will support programmatic deliverables and work closely with partners to coordinate and execute fabrication deadlines. The selected candidate will also work closely with subject matter experts and facility representatives to develop work protocols to promote a safe and secure working environment.

The selected candidate will serve as the technical and administrative face for the project to internal LANL entities, including the Facilities Operations Directorate (FOD), the Infrastructure Program Office (IFPROG), Criticality Safety, the Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMCA) Program, Physical Security, Engineering Services, the Safeguard & Security Planning and Analysis Group (SAFE-PA), the Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the NNSA Field Office, and the Feynman Center. The selected candidate will also serve as the technical face for the project to external entities such as industrial partners, national labs, universities, and international affiliates.

R&D Engineer 4 ($138,700-$240,500)

  • Serve as Project Lead (both institutional leader and technical liaison) for the LEFFF project at LANL

  • Serve as Team Leader for the LEFFF team in MST-8

  • Lead the development of the operational envelope for the LEFFF project, based on facility categorization and customer needs.

  • Develop engineering solutions to meet customer needs based on the approved operational envelope.

  • Serve as the primary author for technical reports and presentations.

  • Lead and influence LEFFF strategic decisions to meet customer needs and future customer needs

  • Actively participate and organize internal and external working groups and meetings to support the successful operation of LEFFF

  • Lead development of internal/external documents to support operation of LEFFF

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for LEFFF to MST, ALDPS and DDSTE at LANL

  • Lead mentoring and training of technical staff

  • Develop and implement plans for new LEFFF customers

  • Lead day-to-day operations of the LEFFF, including monitoring budget, schedule, and scope

  • Successfully maintain schedules with partners

  • Work with the LEFFF team, other LANL organizations, line management, industry partners, and program management to develop strategies to ensure that deliverables are met

  • Interface with program managers and industry partners to negotiate appropriate scope and funding levels

  • Interface with other laboratories and federal program sponsors

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a highly complex capabilities development project.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with numerous organizations within a large and complex institute.

  • Demonstrated experience in applying modern project management controls to perform complex tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet milestones within cost and schedule constraints.

  • Ability to lead a technical team and establish effective and productive partnerships.

  • Advanced degree in science, engineering, or related field.

  • Demonstrated record of commitment to safety, security, quality, and diversity in the workplace.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Formal project and management training.

  • Experience in the supervision and mentoring of technical personnel, including but not limited to staff, technicians, engineers, postdocs and students.

  • Detailed knowledge of fuel fabrication lines.

  • Knowledge of enriched material handling and safeguards, including LANMAS.

  • Experience with industrial quality assurance requirements.

  • Knowledge of the DOE program structure, Laboratory's financial management systems and an aptitude for strategic planning.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
