Walt Disney Imagineering is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of Disney’s Parks and Resorts business segment. Representing more than 150 disciplines, its talented teams of Imagineers are responsible for the creation - from concept initiation through installation and commissioning - of all Disney Resorts, theme parks and attractions, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, and new media projects.

Job Summary

The Show Systems Studio is where we produce the magic. Our processes and tool sets take us from concept design or mockups to full on production, assembly and instillation. Show mechanical engineers are responsible for delivering our world class Audio- Animatronic figures and show action equipment through design, engineering, simulation, fabrication and installation. As well as supporting other disciplines and park partners.

Mechanical engineers within the department drive the design and development of animatronic figures and show action equipment, where durability, long life, reliability, and safety are a must. We are responsible for various engineering tasks: concepts, mockups, design, hazard analysis, FMEA & system safety, FEA, design reviews, documentation, and the overall functionality to fulfill the creative intent. The candidate will support various phases of the engineering process which includes design from concept development through final design, production, test, installation, and commissioning for a variety of theme park attractions.

Responsibilities

You will…

  • Design components and assemblies of highly dynamic mechanical systems.
  • Create models and drawings in SolidWorks and release them in Electronic Data Management Systems (EDMS)
  • Perform calculations for machine designs including development of loads, stress analysis, as well as motor and component sizing.
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mechanical designs.
  • Perform Rigid Body Dynamic (RBD) modelling of animated figures.
  • Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of mechanical designs.
  • Provide production support for animated figures and show action equipment.
  • Support test and commissioning of animated figures and show action equipment.
  • Generate drawings and engineering reports to document engineering designs.

Basic Qualifications

What you bring to the role…

  • Ability to perform advanced engineering analysis and calculations.
  • Possess knowledge of mechanical components design, electro-mechanical actuation, manufacturing processes, kinematic linkages, and systems level thinking.
  • Outstanding "clean sheet" design sensibilities
  • Ability to work within organic or freeform packaging requirements.
  • Strong basis in engineering design tools e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Navisworks or BIM 360, ANSYS or other FEA program, MATLAB
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide technical review, oversite and direction for vendors or peers working on your projects.
  • Ability to establish critical interfaces between teams and communicate technical requirements.
  • Creative problem solving that help to bring stories and characters to life.
  • Willingness to travel both domestic and international as required.
  • Availability to work various shifts commensurate with global project requirements (typically 8am – 5 pm)

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of engineering experience in the design or engineering of dynamic mechanical system design or analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Disney or Themed Entertainment Experience.
  • Demonstrated/proven strong leadership, technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated initiative - able to handle multiple tasks and priorities.

Required Education

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent engineering degree.

Preferred Education

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent engineering degree.
