Why does the job exist?

The Web & SharePoint Solutions Developer is needed to ensure a robust and secure PED public website providing timely information and data including routine development. This position will contribute to the development and maintenance of the Public Education Departments internally developed SharePoint online sites and applications. They will maintain and modernize the PED website to quickly deliver information from various offices and programs such as Charter Schools, Community schools, Indian Education, Early Childhood Education and many others listed on the PED website. They will work closely with program offices, bureaus, and project managers to identify business needs and trends to properly develop SharePoint Online applications.

Topics of relevance to schools, parents and students across the state include: press releases, licensure information, Educator Portal testing options, requirements for expanding on site learning, Grants Management for Education. The current website needs modifications to automatically publish data and information from multiple sources. This position will be responsible for managing, maintaining, administering, and modifying the PED public website content management system to improve data publishing capabilities and enhance end user navigation and usability. The Public Education Department is expanding its SharePoint footprint and a solid underlying knowledge is needed to support the growing SharePoint applications needed for Programs.

How does it get done?

20% - Development of new features and capabilities of the public website for a more effective end user experience including better navigation and searching. Additional modernization activities include: data integration with various agencies and with various systems within the PED, incorporating data visualizations and data query capabilities, ensuring website security best practices, data privacy practices and maintaining Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. Follow established change management process for production deployment of new features and capabilities. Maintenance of designated test environment
for verification of changes prior to production deployment.
30% Development and Maintenance of new and existing SharePoint Online applications.

30% - Administration of patches and updates to WordPress, the web content management system, and WordPress plug-ins; web server performance monitoring and implementation of best practices to ensure a responsive website; management of department web author accounts; training for department web authors to ensure consistent and standardized web publishing practices.
10% - Works with Programs and Bureaus to identify their specific needs for web and SharePoint Online application development.
10% - Address constituent queries and resolve help tickets.

Who are the customers?

Public Education Department constituents which includes: parents, teachers, students, district and charter school administrators, PED Programs/Bureaus, and New Mexico legislators.

Ideal Candidate

A combination of 5 or more years of web development experience using PHP programming language & SharePoint Online, 3 or more years of WordPress content management system experience, 1 or more years experience with the Linux Operating system, 1 or more years of experience with relational database systems and 2 or more years of experience using and configuring Apache web servers.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in software programming. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Office setting. Long periods of sitting and continuous use of monitor and keyboard. Stress due to deadlines and workload. Occasional overnight travel, work after hours, weekends and/or holidays may be required; Occasionally variable work schedule.
