Product Engineer II – Bearings

This position is responsible for bearing selection and development for new programs, and problem resolution for new and existing products. They will analyze customer information, such as duty cycle, and work with bearing suppliers to specify bearings that meet the required life and quality targets. In addition, they will provide technical guidance to Product Engineering during development, manufacturing, and application life of a program. It is their responsibility to address product development and design issues as required in a timely manner and with a quality focus.

Key Accountabilities:

· Responsible for conducting necessary analysis to specify the optimum bearing, with regard to function, durability and quality requirements, for the program

· Responsible for providing technical expertise to engineering projects to ensure program objectives are accomplished according to proper schedules and budgets

· Interfaces with various functional areas, Product Engineering teams and Purchasing to coordinate for a smooth and timely release of the new bearing product or revisions into production

· Interfaces with bearing suppliers to provide support and to stimulate continuous processing improvements to achieve maximum design potential (as applicable if produced internally) and lean ideas

· Develop engineering tools for accurate bearing performance evaluation, to lead to the best performance

· Aware of new technologies and the opportunities to incorporate into products and manufacturing processes

· Provide ongoing consultation and problem solving support to the businesses regarding bearing technology

· Lead process enhancement efforts for bearing technology

· Benchmark internal and external best practices regarding bearing application, performance, handling and product assembly equipment

· Lead the development and refine best practices as applicable for McLaren Engineering

· Mentor end users in related subject matter

· Document bearing knowledge, lessons learned and best practices

· Support/lead resolution of critical issues related to bearings

· Mediate between cross-functional areas as needed

· Actively participate/acts as McLaren Engineering expert for external discussions (i.e. - detailed customer discussions, and industry consortiums)

· Identify bearing coaches (liaisons) within the region that could provide additional consultation and training support

· Develop resources and communications to educate key customers and end users of bearings

· I dentify opportunities to develop new internal and external training programs and resources

· Partner with global cross-functional team members to develop and deliver consistent training programs and resources for bearing technology

· Assess effectiveness of new and existing course materials and training programs

· Deliver training in subject area as needed by the business to increase the knowledge base of the applicable organizations with respect to bearing technology

Minimum Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

· Master of Science in Engineering is preferred

· 3 to 5 years of engineering experience in bearing technology

o A combination of higher education and bearing design/manufacturing experience is an alternate consideration

· Ability to apply mathematical operations tasks (i.e.- frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis)

· Strong functional knowledge of driveline and transmission systems design; casting, forging, machining, and general manufacturing processes

· Experience with bearing analysis software tools is preferred. At least one year of direct Romax experience is required.

· Strong functional knowledge of CAD software applications. Knowledge of other common engineering software applications a plus (FEA, CFD, etc.). Able to perform fundamental mechanical engineering calculations

· Ability to interpret and apply appropriate Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to part design

· Able to prepare summary reports, give recommendations and be an ambassador for the McLaren Engineering brand

· Strong problem solving and listening skills

· Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

· Ability to handle and maintain confidential information

· Ability to function and act independently

· Ability to work well with people in a team environment

· Ability to interact with sales, engineering, manufacturing and quality representatives from the bearing industry
