Chemical Process Engineer
Job Description
At IBM, work is more than a job - it's a calling: To build. To design. To code. To consult. To think along with clients and sell. To make markets. To invent. To collaborate. Not just to do something better, but to attempt things you've never thought possible. Are you ready to lead in this new era of technology and solve some of the world's most challenging problems? If so, lets talk.
Your Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our multi-disciplinary chemical recycling joint venture team, for the position of a process engineer. The candidate should have a background in process chemistry and scale up experience. In this position the candidate will be required to contribute to the process development of a chemical recycling technology including carrying out pressurized reactions and use of characterization tools to monitor chemical reactions and product purity. Familiarity with organic and polymer reactions are key focus areas for this position. The candidate should have a background in analytical techniques including NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and HPLC. Contemporary polymer analysis (such as GPC and MALDI) would be helpful, but not required.
The candidate should have written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a proven record of publications and presentations and demonstrated success in team-based projects. The scientist will be expected to identify key problems, generate novel solutions and reduce them to practice, disseminate the results of such activities to internal colleagues/partners and capture relevant intellectual property via patent applications.
Requirements for this position are a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, experience with process development and good communication skills. Preferred candidates will have a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry with experience in scaling up chemical synthesis processes.
The position requires on site activities at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. IBM is investigating the chemically recycling of feedstock materials such as fabric, fibers (carpet) and bottle material produced from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The candidate will be examining conditions using a catalytic depolymerization reaction to convert commodity PET based articles into high-quality monomers, as well as the economic feasibility of these processes for further development.
