Software Developer Associate

This position is located at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), working in the Climatic Science and Services Division (CSSD) in the Monitoring section.

This position will conduct software development and testing to support a new version of nClimGrid to match the spatial resolution of the existing USDA product line, and assist in maintaining operational software that updates nClimGrid-Daily and Monthly and Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN).

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED: Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Science or related discipline along with software development experience Required Experience: 4+ years experience

Note: Advanced degrees from an accredited institution and/or professional credentials from a recognized entity may be cumulatively tallied and substituted for experience. Masters and associates degrees are equivalent to two years of experience; bachelors and doctoral degrees are equivalent to four years of experience. Requirements for specialized degrees, credentials, and experience will be specified at the task order level.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop software for dataset development and quality control of gridded data, in support of lead scientists
  • Analyze data sources including observations
  • Perform configuration management tasks related to software development
  • Assist in maintaining operational software that updates nClimGrid and GHCN
  • Assist in the period-of-record reprocessing
  • Investigate data partner and user reports of suspect data
  • Develop, test, and validate new quality control techniques that address suspect gridded values and/or station data.
  • Perform post-production quality assurance reviews
  • Incorporate NCEI IT requirements (e.g. security protocols, planned migrations, ad hoc changes) in operational software and new releases
  • Security Clearance Level: Public Trust T2

  • Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in scientific software development
  • Advanced experience in Fortran and Python and shell scripting in linux environment
  • Experience with Git
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently
  • Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility and use government furnished equipment (GFE)
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with various NCEI datasets and data streams including GHCN and nClimGrid
  • A background using environmental/climate variables in research
