Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, Networked Information Solutions, Strategic Initiatives Operating Unit is currently seeking an AI Systems Engineer. The ideal candidate will be based in Linthicum, MD however we will also consider virtual candidates from any US state.

As a Systems Engineer on this team, you will support a team of engineers to define, develop, and deliver novel mathematical and statistical modeling and algorithm development to tackle the challenges of prediction, optimization, and classification. In this role, you will apply machine learning algorithms to large sets of structured and unstructured data to solve a broad range of problems that include applications in pattern recognition, target detection and tracking, machine learning and decision systems, and robotic systems. The AI Systems Engineer works closely with AI Systems Engineers to understand program intent, system capabilities, and output requirements. May design software-systems, applications, and data architectures that directly implement AI techniques to support achieving better reliability, precision, accuracy, and speed to meet performance requirements.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in multi-disciplinary, collaborative teams and contribute to the advancement of novel artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities for today’s warfighter.
  • Work with the customer to integrate radio and communications in a distributed environment. Some travel to customer site Aberdeen, MD. (1-2 times per month).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deploy machine learning algorithms to both prototype and production systems.
  • Design, develop and analyze signal and image processing algorithms for exploitation of sensor data.
  • Additional tasks include defining software and system interfaces, system integration and testing, and field support of experiments and demonstrations including flight tests.
  • Work on products to include written reports, presentations.
  • Occasional travel for meetings and flight test exercises may be required.

Basic Qualifications for Principal AI Software Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience, a Master’s degree with 3 years of experience or a PhD with 0 years of experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related technical fields.
  • The demonstrated ability to perform innovative, applied research, and to develop proper integration techniques of mission modeling applied to the battlefield.
  • Proven work with mission analysis and integration of AI to enhance the mission.
  • Proven ability to develop and work with software packages necessary for customer work.
  • Proven ability to work closely with a customer in a teaming collaborative space virtually and on-site.
  • Proven experience presenting results and progress to the customer and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications for Principal AI Software Engineer:

  • Proven experience with formulating innovative solutions to algorithm development, initiating and fostering client relationships.
  • Proven experience in developing rapid prototype solutions from concept to design, implementation, initial testing, and integration.

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Salary Range: $115,100 USD - $181,300 USD


Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
