Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector is seeking a Process Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located at the Rancho Carmel Facility in San Diego, CA.

Our expertise is in delivering complex equipment to enable modern battlefields and support aviation missions. Our focus is in the world of avionics, radio, and electronic warfare product applications to enable networked communications . As part of the corporation’s Communications business unit, we are the ‘equipment providers.’ Our team of communication systems experts is developing next-generation ground radios for land forces, and our Electronic Warfare subject matter experts are creating the next generation of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) countermeasures to keep our soldiers safe when in harm’s way.

This role is in the Manufacturing organization and will report to the Process Engineering Manager overseeing advanced manufacturing, automation, and manufacturing research and development projects. The focus of this organization is in adding value and accelerating the manufacturing of products. This department is focused on modernizing and innovating the manufacturing and operations practices of the San Diego campuses to achieve strategic objectives and further differentiate the San Diego campuses from its competitors. Area of work for this position concentrates predominantly in Process Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing support for NGC’s production of avionics or counter communications equipment.

Process Engineer

The Process Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the tasks outlined below:

Process Development

  • Developing new and maintaining or improving existing manufacturing processes with a focus on quality, efficiency, and affordability
  • Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigating and initiating corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.
  • Working in cross-functional teams to develop new methods, applications, and processes to support current and future manufacturing needs
  • Providing ROI justification for process improvements
  • Specifying, identifying, and procuring new manufacturing equipment for production readiness and preparing equipment for production with a focus on the machine integration and data collection
  • Developing and optimizing process parameters
  • Developing/revising process documentation and manufacturing work instructions

Factory Support

  • Assist the floor in optimization of process monitoring for process yields, cost, and process stability and capability
  • Working with the production floor personnel to resolve technical issues.
  • Recommending and implementing quality improvements based on metrics and data on efficiency and affordability
  • Creating, validating, and maintaining automatic equipment programs
  • Assisting with training of new personnel, generate process specific training materials and process procedures
  • Supporting factory maintenance personnel with the troubleshooting and repair of process equipment
  • Interfacing with equipment vendors to troubleshoot and resolve issues

Design Support

  • Recommending product design improvements required to produce advanced microelectronics products
  • Documenting state-of-the-art process capabilities and guidelines for product designers
  • Participating in design producibility reviews for new products

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering or related STEM area
  • 2 years of relevant professional experience in Manufacturing or Engineering (or 0 years with an MS)
  • Familiarity with Design of Experiment (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), and 6 sigma concepts for process development
  • Fluency in MS Office software applications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Secret Security Clearance (US Citizenship is required.)

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in deploying automated equipment or robotics
    • Knowledge in Material Science and Chemistry
    • Knowledge of microelectronics technology and materials
    • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma
    • Experience with underfill and/or conformal coating
    • Familiarity with J-STD and MIL-STD requirements
    • Experience with automated equipment and robotics


Salary Range: $77,100 USD - $115,700 USD


Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
