Job Description

This position provides leadership for business intelligence and data analytics of Continuing Education programs and services by:

  • Working with CE directors, product, and program managers to understand needs, key performance indicators, and provide business intelligence requirements.
  • Managing (e.g., design, organization, and access) the data analytics and visualization toolset (e.g., Tableau).
  • Analyzing statistical data and summarizing product and program results for CE leadership consumption.
  • Training CE directors, product, and program managers on data analytics and visualization use within their organizations.

This position will also assist in other Research, Planning, and Assessment processes, as needed:

  • Conducting surveys and other evaluations.
  • Preparing the division for institutional and specialized accreditations.
  • Coordinating assessment across division and academic departments.
  • Responding to data requests from the Office of the Dean and Continuing Education departments in a timely and accurate manner.

Essential Functions

Working with CE directors, product, and program managers to understand needs, key performance indicators, and provide business intelligence requirements.

  • Keep abreast of the business intelligence marketplace and leading data analytics solutions.
  • Discuss business analytic requirements and key performance indicators with CE management.
  • Work with BYU and CE organizations to identify and draw upon possible data sources for meeting analytical needs.
  • Collaborate with teams to integrate data sourcing across systems (DBAs, Computer Ops, etc.)

Managing (e.g., design, organization, and access) the data analytics and visualization toolset (e.g., Tableau).

  • Design, organize, and make data analytics and visualization tools available to authorized CE management and personnel.
  • Extract data of business value using API calls, GraphiQL, web data connectors, etc. for archival, analysis, and reporting.
  • Clean, transform, and integrate data from multiple sources.
  • Monitor and continually improve the quality and use of data analytics and visualizations tools within CE.

Analyzing statistical data and summarizing product and program results for CE leadership consumption.

  • Create and manage instruments to gather student feedback (etc. surveys, focus groups, forms). Report findings to key stakeholders through dashboards, reports, and consultations to inform business practices.
  • Data mine and analyze unstructured data with text mining techniques like cluster analysis and topic modeling.
  • Present information through reports, visualization, and oral presentations.

Training CE directors, product, and program managers on data analytics and visualization use within their organizations.

  • Measure business intelligence tool usage among CE personnel and craft appropriate training.
  • Develop and update technical documentation.

Assist in other Research, Planning, and Assessment processes, as needed.

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree with course work in research design, statistics, analytics, evaluation, or assessment, plus 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of both education and experience.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate, plus 5 years related experience with data analysis or business intelligence at a higher education institution.
  • Basic to intermediate skill in Python, especially with Pandas and Plotly or Matplotlib.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

Required

  • Demonstrated ability to electronically handle data and maintain data confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated writing skills including graphical reporting elements.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships.
  • Advanced to expert skill in data analysis and statistics.
  • Outstanding communication skills, particularly explaining results technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to work with an iterative and incremental development environment.
  • Ability to identify and clarify business needs and translate those into BI solutions.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in statistical tools (e.g., JMP Pro, SPSS, etc.).
  • Ability to design BI tools that are easy to understand and use, regardless of one’s technical background and experience.

Preferred

  • Advanced to expert skill in Tableau Desktop, Prep, & Server.
  • Ability to work with accreditation and legislative bodies.

Approximate Starting Salary: $74,000 - $96,500, depending on qualifications
