Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
Under general guidance of the Principal Investigator, the Test Engineer will become familiar with and understand the operational characteristics, operational limitations, and safety features of a power electronics hardware testbed (aka a microgrid) and all of the standard software, controls, and data acquisition systems that operate the testbed so as to be able to evaluate and advise the testing protocols requested by other researchers. The Test Engineer will review for safety and efficacy the test protocols proposed by researchers including graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, faculty, and occasionally undergraduate students; identify risk factors and suggest means to mitigate risk, including, for example, running simulations under specific conditions, setting appropriate limit parameters for safety protection systems, or defining the incremental increases in stresses that will be applied to the testbed; supervise a graduate student as the student executes test procedures or conduct tests on behalf of a student when the student has defined a safe and proper test and it is more efficacious or prudent for the Test Engineer to perform the test on behalf of the student; and advise the Chief Engineer when changes to or maintenance of the testbed appear to be needed.

Minimum Qualifications
BS Electrical Engineering plus five (5) years in power electronics testing environment, or MS Electrical Engineering plus three (3) years in power electronics testing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Understanding of power electronics and control systems, and supervisory control systems. Understanding of data acquisition and sampling systems. Understanding of simulation tools and environments that can be used to evaluate or validate proposed testing protocols. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to conduct both failure mode and effects analysis and root cause analysis.
