Job Description
Provides project management for facility engineering projects. Ensures that projects are completed safely, timely, cost effectively, and are of desired quality.

Supports larger customers/clients and may lead functional projects under infrequent supervision. Developing a detailed knowledge of the work function.

POSITION PURPOSE:

At the direction of the Sr. Manager, the Senior Automation Engineer is primarily responsible for defining applicable company standards and directing and supervising the work relating to project development including the instrumentation and control systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for oversight of the preparation of instrument data sheets, instrument lists and control valve specifications/datasheets. Responsible for specification of the Basic Process Control Systems and Safety Instrumented Systems for company projects .
  • Prepare requests for proposals (RFP) and request for quotations (RFQ) for services and equipment, respectively. Prepares bid tabs and clarifies bids technically and commercially. Expedites procured items and ensures that inspection has been conducted on the equipment and/or service.
  • Recommends standards for control system equipment to be used by the company.
  • Provides technical support to the Process Engineers in their application of process control schemes (advanced or regulatory) and suitable Automation technologies. Consults with other engineering department personnel in the evaluation and selection of specific control equipment.
  • Collaborate with multi-discipline engineering teams, such as Electrical, Mechanical, Rotating Equipment, Civils, IT telecoms etc, to provide inputs and engineering requirements associated with Automation scope.
  • Evaluates engineering drawings for proposed chemical process plants and develops specifications for instruments, analyzers and other control system equipment for use in the process. Communicates instrument and control system specifications to vendors and licensees and evaluates bids to provide desired hardware. Assists in the negotiation of costs for specified equipment.
  • Participate in design review meetings and directs design partners and technology partners in facility requirements.
  • Provide technical advice to contractors and vendors to help resolve instrumentation and control system problems.
  • Prepare and present technical reports to support the evaluations and recommendations.
  • Select and supervise contract engineers in preparing instrumentation and control systems. Evaluate preliminary designs, and process design packages.
  • Directs the activities of technical teams supporting the commissioning, start-up, and operation of pilot and commercial plant facilities.
  • Provide technical support on measurement and control systems to plant personnel.
  • Make technical presentations plant personnel.
  • Review technical contract terms for purchase orders and contracts.
  • Manage execution of Main Automation Contractor on capital projects
  • Approve process payments to vendors and contractors.
  • Establish and build long term relationships with vendors, contractors and company management.
  • Have a working knowledge of applicable industry standards such as NFPA, ISA, IEC, API and others.
  • Have working knowledge of industrial communication protocols.
  • Experienced with application of the Functional Safety Lifecycle as well as Alarm Management processes.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Required: A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering or a related field is required. Licensing as a Professional Engineer is preferred.

Experience Required: Ten or more years designing control systems in the chemical or petrochemical engineering industry with specific experience in process measurement, control valves and systems.

Skills Required:

  • Analytical skill to analyze, interpret, and design complex instrumentation and control systems.
  • Written and oral communication skills to provide complex communications to senior management, external licensees and vendors.
  • Supervisory skills to manage third parties such as automation and engineering contractors.
  • Must have the ability to operate a computer and commercial (MS Office) and technical software.
  • Basic skills to use cloud based document management and collaboration tools
  • Computer programing skills to design, document, and implement complex software systems.

Working Relationships/Contacts:

  • Internal contacts with when designing and implementing control systems. Contacts with senior management to report on the status of projects.
  • External contracts engineers and contractors to design and install new control systems. Contacts with vendors to evaluate and investigate new control system technology. Contact with company users of products to provide technical support.

BASIC MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position may require extended periods of sitting while operating computer terminal and engaging in communication with walk-in and phone customers. This job requires continuous mental alertness to analyze data and develop multi-faceted information, in a fast-paced environment. In some cases, climbing of ladders and stairways is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General office working conditions with extended periods sitting while operating computer terminals/phones. Significant amount of time spent viewing computer terminal, filling orders and/or reading detailed reports. Extended or flexible work hours as needed or required by industry or corporate situations. Moderate and overnight travel required. Some work in process plants is required.
