Overview:

Merrick is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer I – Technical Lead to join a team of engineering and design personnel serving the Nuclear Services & Technology Business Unit in our project office in Oak Ridge, TN. This dynamic multi-discipline engineering group specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom capital equipment, gloveboxes, hot cells, specialty research equipment and custom-designed, remote handling mechanisms for handling high energy radioisotopes and other hazardous materials.

This experienced Sr. Mechanical Engineer will serve as Technical Lead Engineer for a small team of Mechanical Engineers and other Sr. Mechanical Engineers within the equipment design group and interface with other disciplines (electrical, I&C, structural, and process).

This position requires is a degreed engineer capable of managing multiple tasks. Tasks include the design of containment systems (gloveboxes, containment hoods), material handling systems, equipment integration and installation, and preparation of fabrication drawings, specifications, datasheets, acceptance test plans and calculations, and act in a supervisory role for other Mechanical Engineers and Sr. Mechanical Engineers.

The successful candidate will delegate work to other engineers and will check their work on projects. Additionally, the candidate will assist and develop design criteria, manage work scope, schedule, budgets, project proposals, annual performance reviews of team reports, approve timesheets weekly, and mentor junior Mechanical Engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate on and lead multi-disciplinary teams of engineers.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record on mechanical equipment designs.
  • Follow regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures.
  • Detailed design activities include preparation of fabrication drawing packages, equipment datasheets, fabrication specifications, procurement specifications, engineering studies, test plans, and detailed equipment sizing & qualification calculations.
  • Responsibilities include planning, conducting, and coordinating detailed phases of design work; presenting design reviews to clients; and providing shop support during fabrication and testing.
  • Weekly timesheet approvals and accuracy
  • Supervisor of up to 6 Mechanical Engineers and/or Sr. Mechanical Engineers
  • Annual Performance Reviews
  • Mentorship of Jr. Mechanical Engineers
  • Proposal estimates for potential projects.
  • Interviewing prospective Mechanical Engineers

Required Experience

  • Bachelor of Sciences degree in Engineering required from an ABET Accredited Program.
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of engineering experience required.
  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to acquire a security clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience with leading mechanical engineering teams within a complex multi-discipline team is required.
  • Familiarity with 3D design software Creo (Pro-Engineer), SolidWorks, or Inventor.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Candidate must have a Professional Engineering License in the state of Tennessee.
  • Previous experience with NRC, DOE, or DoD projects desired.
  • Familiarity with NQA-1-2000 quality assurance programs desired.
  • Experience with supplier support, factory testing, and field startup desired.
  • Familiarity with MS Project or Primavera scheduling software a plus.
  • Familiarity with MS Access a plus.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with ASME B31.3
  • Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, Division 1 and/or 2
  • Familiarity with metal forming, metal machining, and welding
  • Familiarity with reading P&ID documents
  • Familiarity with developing fabrication drawings

Physical Requirements

  • Requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
  • Be able to work in an environment with open discussions and visitors without getting distracted.
  • May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.

  • Typical salary for this position is a minimum of $135,000. The pay range listed in this posting indicates the position’s eligibility to work in the state of Colorado and is consistent with our offices there; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
