Pay Range
$103,290 - $139,128 Annually for the SES.1 level
$123,960 - $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Mechanical/Optical Engineer with an emphasis in experimental testing for the Flight Test Group. You will be responsible for characterizing optical system designs, interfacing with mechanical efforts, documentation, and programming for data processing. Scope of work involves parallel tasks with broadly defined priorities. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), supporting the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Run tests and compile statistical characterization of optical components and systems.
- Develop and write code analysis procedures for image processing.
- Apply experimental data for mission data processing.
- Interpret optical designs for mechanical engineering efforts.
- Specify optical components; identify and resolve moderately complex optical issues.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives and functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team of optical engineers and CAD designers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level
- Develop and refine test procedures and diagnostics for optical test setups.
- Perform optical systems design and engineering.
- Provide timely and effective status for multiple projects in parallel.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Ability to interpret optical and mechanical specifications. Experience working with or educational training understanding optical systems.
- Understanding of thermodynamics, radiation, and spectral analysis.
- Experience writing image analysis software in MATLAB or Python.
- Experience working in a team environment with project deadlines.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level
- Experience gathering and compiling data for technical reporting or publication.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
- Experience with Code V or equivalent optical design software (ZEMAX, FRED, OSLO).
- Experience with Creo Parametric or equivalent CAD/modeling software (Solidworks, Rhino).
- Comprehensive knowledge of optical design principles and engineering.
- Understanding of colorimetry, spectrophotometry, blackbody radiation, and spectral calibration techniques.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
