General Description

This position assists in planning and directing the City's Fire Prevention program including investigations, inspections, and delivery of emergency and non-emergency services. This position exercises considerable independence and initiative in the performance of routine tasks. Works under the general direction of the Fire Marshal.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.


Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

Primary Duties

  • Assists with formulating related training; performs in-service training; and may conduct classes for volunteer and/or career personnel.
  • May drive and operate fire department apparatus and equipment.
  • Performs fire inspections to enforce compliance with fire codes; and maintains records.
  • Responsible for enforcement of all laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances of the City of Clermont and the State of Florida relating to fire protection, fire prevention, and protection of life and property.
  • May investigate fires for cause, origin, and/or arson.
  • Performs flow tests on fire hydrants; and operates pumps and hydrants
  • Monitors communications equipment and broadcasts messages.
  • Updates manual and computer records.
  • When required, performs public relations functions between City and various civic agencies and/or other fire departments; and performs fire education functions for the public at various locations and for various age groups.
  • Performs research and conducts surveys; analyzes information, and creates reports as required or requested.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints, and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility,
  • Attends training sessions and seminars,
  • Assists with and makes suggestions for programs and materials for educating the public.
  • Maintains method of contact (home telephone, personal cellular telephone) and may be placed on emergency call outs
  • May be required to work rotating shifts, on-call duties, and extended hours in emergency situations
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree or vocational school education in Public Safety or closely related field.
  • One (1) year of work experience in fire prevention.
  • State of Florida Municipal Fire Safety Inspector certification.
  • Valid Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card for Health Care Providers with Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.
In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

Essential Physical Functions & Environmental Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Continuous light work and occasional heavy work.
  • Walking, climbing, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, jumping, running, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Lifts 50+ pounds.
  • Climbs ladders, both ground and aerial apparatus.
  • Good hand/eye coordination and finger/hand dexterity.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction.)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
  • Regular driving of vehicles and operation of equipment.
  • Wears protective clothing and related equipment of 60 pounds or more.
  • Works in extremely high temperatures and toxic atmospheres.
  • Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions, including, but not limited to, weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.), hazardous conditions and close/confined spaces for long periods of time.
Work Environment
Works inside in an office environment. Also, works outside in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc., including extremes of each). May encounter hazardous conditions such as flames, chemicals, smoke, heat, gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting, heights, cold, extreme weather conditions, and contagious diseases. Encounters situations threatening to life and/or property.
