This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Highway Engineer for our Orlando office! This candidate should have experience in leading design of civil, highway, roadway geometric design, complete streets, temporary traffic control, limited access highway design and PD&E related design and/or traditional delivery and alternative delivery projects. This position will function as the lead engineer or project manager on major projects for the state DOT and other local agency / municipal clients. Responsibilities also include project management, leading pursuits, maintaining client relationships, staffing projects, design and QA/QC.
Provides subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, and improvement of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Provides situational guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future challenges, and that documentation and recommendations accurately account for and address risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities. Provides leadership with ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Your Impact
- Collaborating with management to determine long-range plans and objectives, including recommendations on project staffing
- Actively seek out and lead new opportunities by leveraging established local relationships and participate in pursuit proposals
- Maintain positive client relationships to expand current business
- Providing guidance and mentoring of staff and direct work assignments
- Manage Projects and maintain schedule, budget, and profitability of assigned projects, overseeing preparation of plans, specifications, and proposals
- Lead project tasks for conceptual and preliminary engineering and final design activities, as well as development of construction plans, calculations and specifications
- Coordinate with other design disciplines such as structures, hydraulics, traffic, and utilities, etc
- Assist in leading and continue developing the Civil/Highway design team
- Participate hands-on in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E)
- Review, monitor and/or develop complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates standards and guidelines, correspondence, and/or prepare reports
- Participate in preparation of technical proposals and labor estimates
- Commitment to quality and continuous improvement through innovation, creative thinking and improved results
- Establish and maintain cooperative and productive work relationships with all employees, clients and other stakeholders
- Lead larger-scale civil engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
- Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, integrated waste management plans, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering
- 7-10 years of experience in large transportation and infrastructure projects
- Professional Engineering License in Florida
- Significant experience leading design teams on FDOT and municipal projects (civil, highway, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, drainage design and PD&E related design)
- Experience leveraging established relationships in the South Florida market to seek out opportunities for new pursuits
- Project and staff management experience on large civil transportation projects
- Experience with daily management and mentoring of staff
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience serving as a Project Manager on Alternative Delivery projects
- Experience with large design build projects
