Where the Chemistry Happens

As a chemicals supplier to almost all industries, BASF will establish a standalone subsidiary dedicated to its Mobile Emissions Catalysts, Precious Metals Trading, Recycling, and related Products and Services business. The new group is referred to as BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) and is wholly owned by BASF. BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions will operate globally in over 15 countries and comprise of approximately 20 production sites and over 4,000 employees.

The position of Senior Engineer is located at BASF ECMS’s Catalyst Research and Development site in Iselin, New Jersey. We are a leading supplier of environmental catalysts worldwide. Our team supports the development of next generation automotive catalysts for gasoline and Diesel applications. We are seeking an experienced professional like you to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the continuous advancement of our research laboratories by leading the implementation of new capabilities, improving methods, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost-effective operation.

As a Senior R&D Project Engineer you create chemistry by…

  • Leveraging your extensive educational background in Chemical Engineering or a related field, along with your laboratory or project engineering experience, you will lead various projects and provide direction and be instrumental in supporting overall organizational goals and programs.

  • Your excellent project management skills will be essential as you will manage multiple small- and medium-size projects that vary in scope and complexity, including design and construction of highly customized R&D equipment on laboratory scale. Your in-depth knowledge of small-scale specialty gas operations/delivery systems will be a plus as you will work with R&D engineers on laboratory equipment that utilizes sophisticated specialty gas delivery systems, high temperature heating, and advanced controls.

  • Your day-to-day activities include interactions with stakeholders such as R&D personnel, Site Management, EHS, contractors, vendors & Senior Leadership to clarify needs, boundary conditions, and solution proposals.

  • Your commitment to workplace safety will be critical as you will be relied on to maintain a safe and productive workplace and ensure compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, and technical standards. Leading the Management of Change (MOC) process for all ECMS R&D projects will be one of your key responsibilities.

  • Applying your strong communication and engineering skills, you will lead the development of project technical packages that include P&IDs, equipment layouts, specifications of components in full compliance with applicable industry standards. You will generate RFQ packages for competitive bidding, review of vendor submittals, and work with Procurement to purchase necessary equipment.

  • In your role you will also be responsible for all asset management, and you will ensure that the R&D organization stays compliant with critical maintenance and replacement schedules of laboratory and safety equipment including required documentation.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Your formula for success…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering +10 years or Master’s degree in Engineering +7 years of experience in the field of chemical engineering and /or safety engineering

  • Your in-depth knowledge of small-scale specialty gas operations/delivery systems will be a plus

  • You are self-driven and must work well both independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

  • Strong communication and engineering skills

  • Working knowledge of an ERP system (procurement or project modules) is a plus
